Can a person be "gay" and a Christian? Although many claim to be gay Christians (Soulforce, www.gaychristian.net), I have a couple issues with this "label."
As followers of Jesus Christ, our identity should be in Christ alone. Everything that normally identifies me (Chinese, American, single, graduate student, son, brother, musician and even a male), are all in a sense insignificant when it comes to my identity in Jesus Christ. In Phil 3:5-8, Paul said that his best attributes were rubbish (dung, crap, etc.). In Gal 2:20, Paul says that we "no longer live" but that "Christ lives" in us. Scripture tells us that we must "clothe ourselves with Christ" Rom 13:14. It is very clear in the Bible that if we are to have any identity, it is in Jesus Christ. So why do people want to say that they are "gay" Christians?
Popular belief claims that people are born gay (some state this is a "fact"). But human sexuality is a very complex issue and to date, no scientist, doctor or psychologist knows how one develops his/her sexuality (homosexuality or heterosexuality for that matter). There is ONLY one conclusion which can be gathered from scientific evidence to date.
Sexuality is not MERELY genetics.
The Bailey and Pillard twin study (1991) revealed when one identical twin was "gay," only 52% of the time the other identical twin was homosexual. If sexuality is solely genetics (innate or inborn), then when one twin was homosexual, the other would be homosexual 100% of the time. This test shows that there are more factors involved in the development of human sexuality other than genetics.
In addition, there is no empirical test for homosexuality. The ONLY determining factor for homosexuality is experiential, that is either by one's actions or by one's words. If scientists have truly proven that we are born heterosexual/homosexual, then we should be able to walk into a newborn nursery room of a hospital and point out the heterosexual and homosexual babies. But alas we cannot, because homosexuality is more or less existential and not inextricably linked to one's essence.
But how about one's feelings? I do not think that a person "chooses" to have heterosexual or homosexual feelings which goes back to the complexity of human sexuality, but a follower of Christ is not called to "follow" his/her feelings but "he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow [Jesus Christ]" Mark 8:34.
Both sides of the "gay Christian" debate neglect to mention the most important message of the Bible: redemption and transformation. The bible teaches that homosexuals can change, "Such were some of you..." 1 Cor 6:11. If one has truly become a follower of Christ, "he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come" 2 Cor 5:17.
Although I applaud www.gaychristian.net for being tolerant to the view that "gay Christians" should be celibate because homosexual behavior was a sin (more details) as opposed to Soulforce, there is no mention of the miracle of transformation which is the whole reason for Jesus Christ coming to this earth.
To me, the issue simply has to deal with one's identity. I struggle with putting my identity in anything other than Christ. Personally, I would not call myself a Chinese-American Christian or even a male Christian. I believe that as a child of the living my God, my identity should be in Jesus Christ ALONE. So that is why I have issues with the term, "gay" Christian.
I'd love to hear your thoughts!
